Economic Benefits and the Importance of Mining
The metals produced from mining are the silent rivers that have run through the northern Minnesota economy since the late 1800s when the region’s rich iron ore deposits were first discovered and mined. The NorthMet project represents a resurgence of mining in the region, offering hundreds of good-paying jobs to the next generation of miners and infusing hundreds of millions of dollars annually into the local economy.
Mining copper, nickel and other precious metals on the Iron Range will boost Minnesota’s economy by leveraging existing mining infrastructure, putting the Eastern Mesabi Iron Range to work and revitalizing support businesses in a wide variety of industries.
The NorthMet project will support:
- 360 full-time jobs
- 2 Million construction hours
- $515 Million annual boost to the St. Louis County economy
- 600+ jobs indirectly
