Our ongoing commitment to community involvement
Share
In northeastern Minnesota, communities stick together – and we know we’re strongest when citizens, business and community leaders and policymakers work together toward a common goal. We are proud to call the Iron Range of northeastern Minnesota our home. We live, work, learn and play in many of these communities each day. Giving back and supporting our local communities are cornerstones of PolyMet’s company values.
We live out our commitment of being a good neighbor through active and sustained involvement in many Iron Range communities. We’re involved in several initiatives throughout the year, lending our financial and human resources to grow and support leaders, protect our environment and bring people together.
Water Carnival
Every summer, our local area teems with activity surrounding the Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival. Locals and visitors alike come together for a weekend that celebrates our way of living. PolyMet was pleased to sponsor the carnival again this year. We also enjoyed serving the annual Community Picnic on July 25, 2019. This event kicked off the Water Carnival in style, and our team had fun mingling while serving some perfectly-grilled steaks.
Lear moreSTEM Scholarship
Students of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are the future of industry in our region. Each year, we award a $5,000 and $2,500 scholarship to deserving high school seniors in Minnesota who show an aptitude for and achievement in STEM education. Scholarships are awarded for academic and trade-related programs. In 2019, we awarded three scholarships to smart young women with outstanding potential to drive the industry forward in STEM careers.
Learn moreMinnesota High School League Tournaments
High school sports bring families and communities together, especially in northern Minnesota. Today’s athletes become tomorrow’s leaders, and it is important to celebrate the hard work, dedication and sportsmanship of these talented young men and women. PolyMet is a proud major sponsor of the Minnesota State High School League tournaments.
Ducks Unlimited
We have partnered with Ducks Unlimited in support of its Living Lakes Initiative for many years. This accelerated wetland conservation program restores the health and functionality of Minnesota’s degraded shallow lakes and wetlands. Our funding helps Ducks Unlimited enhance wild rice growth in more than 100 shallow lakes and wetlands in Minnesota.
Tours
We are proud to hold the permits to the first copper-nickel mine in Minnesota, and we’re not ashamed to admit that we enjoy showing it off. As preparation for construction of our modern high-tech mine continues, we know firsthand that tours are a great way for community members, business leaders, policymakers and students to gain a deeper understanding of the NorthMet project. Tours provide visitors a closer look at both our facility and our strategy for mining this resource safely and sustainably.
If you have a civic, academic or service group interested in touring our facility, please contact us to learn more about available tours.
