PolyMet awards 2022 Mining for Excellence scholarship
Share
At the end of every year, we seek the state’s top high school students who demonstrate potential in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Our Mining for Excellence scholarship rewards high achievers and helps fund their education to become the scientists, thinkers and leaders of a better tomorrow.
This year there were over 40 applicants, all of whom deserve recognition for their hard work and study.
“Every year, we are proud to support the next generation of talented students who bring their knowledge and passion to STEM careers,” said LaTisha Gietzen, PolyMet’s director of public and community relations.
Returning to the Minnesota State High School Boys Hockey Tournament on Friday, March 11, PolyMet announced this year’s winner, Laura Holmstrom of Roseau High School.
Laura, who was awarded the $5,000 Mining for Excellence scholarship, has been accepted to U.S. Military Academy at West Point where she plans to pursue a degree in industrial engineering and is specifically interested in the mining and energy production fields. The judges say she stood out not only because of her success in calculus and physics, but also her focus on volunteerism.
“I attended the West Point Summer Leader Experience and saw female cadets excelling in engineering and leadership fields. All of these experiences combined to give me a passion for STEM,” Laura said.
Congratulations to Laura and we wish her all the best at West Point.
We have awarded $60,000 in scholarships to 16 Minnesota students to date.
